Edit Videos in iMovie

TODO: collapasable, copyable, download, etc

I have several videos on a Mac that I want to edit together.

  • demo.mp4 - I want some of the audio and all of the video from this
  • creative_writing - I only want the audio of this

In what order would you open the files? When do I split a clip into video and audio. How would I get the audio over into the other proejct, etc?I have several videos on a Mac that I want to edit together using iMovie.

In what order would you open the files? When do I split a clip into video and audio. How would I get the audio over into the other proejct, etc?Editing videos to combine different elements from separate files, such as video from one and audio from another, can be a creative and rewarding process. The steps below outline a general workflow for accomplishing this task using video editing software available on a Mac, like iMovie or Final Cut Pro. These steps are somewhat generic and can be adapted to most video editing software:

  1. Open Your Video Editing Software: Launch your preferred video editing software on your Mac.

  2. Import Both Video Files:

    • Start by importing both demo.mp4 and creative_writing (assuming it's a video file) into your project.
    • If creative_writing is an audio file, import it directly into the audio sectionEditing videos in iMovie on a Mac involves a few steps to manage both video and audio from different sources. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you combine the video from "demo.mp4" and the audio from "creative_writing" into a single project:
  3. Open iMovie and Create a New Project:

    • Open iMovie on your Mac.
    • Click on "Create New" and select "Movie" to start a new project.
  4. Import Your Files:

    • Go to the "File" menu, then select "Import Media."
    • Find and select "demo.mp4" and "creative_writing" (ensure this file is in a supported format, like MP3 or WAV if it's audio-only).
    • Import both files into your iMovie library.
  5. Add the Video Clip ("demo.mp4") to the Timeline:

    • Drag "demo.mp4" from your library and drop it onto the timeline at the bottom of the screen.
    • This will add both the video and audio from "demo.mp4" to your project.
  6. Detaching Audio from Video (for "demo.mp4"):

    • Right-click (or Control-click) on the "demo.mp4" clip in the timeline.
    • Select "Detach Audio." This separates the audio from the video, creating a new audio-only track below the video track.
    • If you only want some of the audio from "demo.mp4," you can now trim, cut, or delete parts of this detached audio track as needed.
  7. Add the Audio Clip ("creative_writing"):

    • If "creative_writing" is a video file and you only need the audio, first add it to the timeline.
    • Then, detach the audio from the "creative_writing" clip using the same method as above.
    • If "creative_writing" is already an audio file, simply drag it from your library to the timeline, positioning it below the video track of "demo.mp4."
  8. Editing and Syncing Audio:

    • Now you have two audio tracks: one from "demo.mp4" and one from "creative_writing."
    • Align the "creative_writing" audio track with the video from "demo.mp4" as needed. You can drag the audio track left or right to sync it with specific video parts.
    • Use the editing tools in iMovie to trim, split, or adjust the audio tracks for proper timing and overlap.
  9. Adjusting Volume and Audio Effects:

    • You can adjust the volume of each audio track independently.
    • Use the audio inspector to add effects, adjust equalization, or reduce background noise.
  10. Finalizing Your Project:

    • Once you're satisfied with the synchronization and the overall edit, you can add transitions, titles, or other effects as needed.
    • Play back your project to ensure everything looks and sounds as intended.
  11. Exporting Your Finished Video:

    • Go to the "File" menu, then select "Share" and choose the appropriate option (e.g., "File" for saving to your computer).
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to save your finished video.

Remember, editing is often a trial-and-error process, so feel free to experiment with different tools and settings in iMovie to achieve the desired result.
