Adding External Testers Internally

I'm trying to add users to a group for internal testing in testflight. The UI makes me assign them a role. These people are random strangers... why would I give them a role like Marketing, Finance, etc?In TestFlight, the roles you assign to internal testers are part of Apple's iTunes Connect roles system, which is used to manage permissions within your App Store Connect organization. While it might seem odd to assign roles like Marketing or Finance to random testers, these roles are more about internal company management than actual testing activities.

For internal testers, Apple requires that they be part of your organization with assigned roles because they have access to all builds by default, and their activity might affect all aspects of app management, including analytics and financial data. This is different from external testers who are only granted access to specific builds you make available to them and do not need roles within your organization.

If you're adding users who are not part of your organization and just need to test the app, you should add them as external testers. External testers don't need to have a role assigned in your organization and can be added by simply inviting them via their email addresses. Here's how you can do it:

1. Go to App Store Connect: Log in to your App Store Connect account.
2. Select Your App: Click on "My Apps" and select the app you want to manage.
3. Go to TestFlight: Select the "TestFlight" tab at the top of the screen.
4. Add External Testers:
   • Go to the "External Testing" section in the sidebar.
   • Click on “+” next to Testers or click on “Add External Testers” if you already have groups set up.
   • Enter the email addresses of the testers you want to invite.

This way, you can add testers without needing to assign them specific roles within your organization. External testers will only have access to the builds you explicitly send them and won’t interact with any other App Store Connect functionality.
